About Us

CUSAGC is the Scout and Guide Club for the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University.

Our club

CUSAGC (Cambridge University Scout and Guide Club) is open to all students in higher education in Cambridge. Don’t be misled by the name; this includes Anglia Ruskin University’s Cambridge campus, Cambridge Regional College, and the University of Cambridge. We run a variety of events each term, with something going on every week. We don’t have a regular meeting place, date, or time, and all event details are sent out by email, so make sure to check your inbox if you’re interested.

We run events in three main categories: adventure, including hiking, climbing, and kayaking; social activities, such as lunches, formal meals, and bowling; and service, which involves working with local Scout and Guide groups. If there’s something you’d like to do, suggest it to the committee. Some of our regular events include the Crew Training Weekend (CTW), held during the winter vacation and usually involving a few days of walking; Marathon, our annual challenge walk for anyone aged 14 or over who is involved in Scouting or Guiding, including leaders, in which participants aim to visit 26 grid references within a 5 km radius and complete several mystery challenges; and our post-exams Punt Joust, which is exactly what it sounds like.

There is also the opportunity to meet Scouts and Guides from other universities at SSAGO Rally, held three times a year, and at the annual SSAGO Ball. Cambridge hosted its own Rally in summer 2018. All club equipment is free for members to use, so taking part doesn’t have to be expensive; we have tents and even sleeping bags available if you didn’t bring your own to Cambridge. There’s no need to have any previous connection to either Scouts or Guides to get involved; you just need an interest in some of the many things we do. That said, if you’re interested in helping with a local Scout or Guide group, we have strong links with local units and can help put you in touch with one that fits around your schedule. Offers of help are always welcome, whether regular or occasional and whether you are experienced or eager to learn. We can also support you in completing the Queen’s Guide Award, King’s Scout Award, or any other badgework you may be interested in.

Our members

We currently have 18 active members.

Our current chair is Filip Lehota.

Our mascots

Current mascot (stealable, pictured): Whimsy — a small duck with a very fetching “bum hat”. Whimsy attends most of our meetings and lives with our Chair.

Mascot Emeritus (non-stealable): Whispy — a large duck who has been with the club for many years. He is currently enjoying his retirement with one of our fogies, but often makes an appearance at our two annual service events and our annual dinner.
